AMSTERDAM – Borussia Mönchengladbach's Fabian Johnson endured a rough ending to their Champions League Group D tilt with Manchester City on Wednesday night, with the American charged with the last-minute penalty foul that allowed Sergio Agüero to bag the 2-1 winner.
The US international started the contest on left wing, where he stayed until switching to right back in the 78th minute. Just three minutes in, Johnson shrewdly slipped Raffael into the Man City area, but the striker fired well wide from a good position.
Johnson also sent Raffael – who also failed on a first-half penalty kick – into the box to draw a good Joe Hart save just after the break. He made the move to the back line with the game tied 1-1, providing three tackles and a clearance before eventually tripping up Agüero in the Foals' area on the edge of stoppage time.
The loss kept 'Gladbach at the bottom of Group D through two rounds. Next up, they will host early table-toppers Juventus on March 11.
