The eMLS All-Star Challenge Presented by Wells Fargo won a Tempest Award for "best new event stream" on Tuesday night, earning one of esports’ highest honors at a gala held during the Esports Business Summit in Las Vegas.
The product of MLS’s partnership with EA Sports, the All-Star Challenge was a 2v2 FIFA 18 tournament held during 2018 MLS All-Star Week in Atlanta, featuring eMLS players, MLS legends and current players and other celebrities.
Featuring a 16-player field that included eight eMLS players, an MLS player, a European challenger, four celebrity guests and the top two finishers in an open qualifying event, the eMLS All-Star Challenge tournament unfolded in dramatic fashion at MLS Digital HQ in downtown ATL and Wells Fargo made a $5,000 donation to the charity of the winning team.
In other Tempest Awards proceedings, eMLS Cup Presented by PlayStation earned honorable mention in the "best social experience" category and New York Red Bulls esports athlete Mike Labelle was named to "The Watch List."
Honoring “the esports industry’s most innovative companies and executives” across a range of categories, the Tempest Awards “serve as North America’s top honors for the brands, the teams, the leagues, the players and the business leaders driving the competitive gaming industry today,” in the words of event organizers.
